Description

A deliciously easy and kid-friendly recipe combining the classic flavors of grilled cheese and hot dogs, made quickly and perfectly crispy using an air fryer. These Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs feature gooey melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese inside soft buns, with a buttery garlic crust on the outside.

Ingredients

Scale

Hot Dogs and Cheese

  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 4 hot dogs
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (or American cheese)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella (optional)

Butter Mixture

  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

For Serving

  • Ketchup and mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and let it preheat for 3–5 minutes to ensure it reaches the optimal temperature for crisping the buns evenly.
  2. Prepare the hot dogs: Slice each hot dog lengthwise without cutting all the way through, so they open like a book, allowing for cheese and fillings to be placed inside more easily.
  3. Assemble the hot dogs: Place a slice of cheddar cheese inside each hot dog bun, then add the sliced hot dog. Sprinkle the optional shredded mozzarella over the hot dog for extra cheesiness.
  4. Make garlic butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic powder to create a flavorful butter spread that will be brushed on the buns.
  5. Butter the buns: Brush the outsides of each assembled bun generously with the garlic butter mixture to achieve a golden, crispy finish.
  6. Air fry the assembled hot dogs: Carefully place the hot dogs in the air fryer basket. Cook for 5–7 minutes until the buns are golden brown and crispy, and the cheese inside has melted perfectly.
  7. Serve: Remove the hot dogs from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with ketchup and mustard or your favorite condiments.

Notes

  • To keep buns crispier, avoid overloading with too many toppings which can make them soggy.
  • Optional toppings like sliced pickles, jalapeños, or grilled onions add extra flavor and texture.
  • Works great with regular or brioche hot dog buns for a richer taste.
