Description

These Baked Italian Sub Sandwiches are warm, cheesy, and packed with layers of deli meats, fresh veggies, and flavorful Italian seasonings. Perfect for an easy lunch or dinner, they combine melty provolone and mozzarella with ham, salami, and pepperoni inside toasted hoagie rolls, topped with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and a tangy drizzle of Italian dressing and mayo.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter Mixture

  • 4 hoagie or sub rolls
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Meat and Cheese

  • 8 slices deli ham
  • 8 slices salami
  • 8 slices pepperoni
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese

Fresh Vegetables and Condiments

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • ¼ cup sliced red onions
  • ¼ cup banana peppers (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Italian dressing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the sandwiches.
  2. Prepare the Seasoned Butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with Italian seasoning and minced garlic thoroughly.
  3. Slice the Rolls: Cut each hoagie or sub roll lengthwise without cutting all the way through, creating a hinge to hold the sandwich fillings.
  4. Butter the Rolls: Spread the seasoned butter mixture evenly on the inside of each sliced roll to add flavor and help with browning.
  5. Layer the Meats: Layer each roll with 2 slices each of ham, salami, and pepperoni for a robust Italian meat flavor.
  6. Add the Cheese: Place one slice of provolone and one slice of mozzarella cheese on top of the meats on each sandwich.
  7. Bake the Sandwiches: Set the sandwiches on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the bread is lightly toasted.
  8. Add Fresh Toppings: Remove the sandwiches from the oven and gently open each one. Add shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, banana peppers if using, a drizzle of mayonnaise, and Italian dressing.
  9. Serve Warm: Serve the sandwiches immediately while warm and enjoy their melty, savory goodness.

Notes

  • You can customize the meats or cheese based on your preferences—try turkey or roast beef, or add spicy capicola.
  • For extra crispness, broil the sandwiches for 1–2 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
