Description

The Blackberry Margarita Smash is a vibrant and refreshing cocktail that combines fresh blackberries, silver tequila, and zesty lime juice. Perfect for warm evenings or festive gatherings, this cocktail features a balance of sweet and tart flavors enhanced by mint and a choice of a sugar or salt rim. Easy to prepare and visually stunning, it’s a delightful twist on the classic margarita.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit & Herbs

  • 1/2 cup fresh blackberries
  • 3-4 fresh mint leaves (optional)
  • Extra blackberries (for garnish)
  • Lime wedge (for garnish and rim)
  • Mint sprig (for garnish)

Liquids & Alcohol

  • 1 1/2 ounces silver tequila (or mezcal for a smoky twist)
  • 3/4 ounce triple sec (or orange liqueur like Cointreau)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (or honey/agave syrup)

Other

  • Ice cubes
  • Sugar or salt (for the rim)

Instructions

  1. Muddle the Blackberries and Mint: In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the fresh blackberries along with the mint leaves (if using) to release their flavors and aroma.
  2. Add the Liquids: Pour in the silver tequila or mezcal, triple sec or orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup or honey/agave syrup into the shaker. Fill it with ice cubes to chill the mixture.
  3. Shake and Strain: Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously for 10-15 seconds to thoroughly mix and chill the ingredients.
  4. Strain into Glass: Strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Use a fine mesh strainer if you prefer to remove the blackberry pulp for a smoother drink.
  5. Prepare the Rim: Moisten the rim of the glass by rubbing it with a lime wedge, then dip it into sugar or salt to create a flavorful rim.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Garnish the cocktail with extra blackberries, a lime wedge, and a fresh mint sprig. Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing drink.

Notes

  • For a smoky flavor, substitute silver tequila with mezcal.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of simple syrup or using honey/agave syrup.
  • Mint leaves are optional but add a refreshing aroma and flavor layer.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor impact.
  • Rimming the glass with sugar vs. salt will alter the cocktail’s flavor profile; sugar adds sweetness while salt enhances the tanginess.
  • Use a fine mesh strainer if you prefer a pulp-free cocktail.
  • Can be scaled up for a larger batch to serve multiple guests.
