Ingredients
Scale
For the Steak Patties:
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for umami)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Patty Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, depending on your preferred size.
- Sear Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Sear the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned on the outside. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside; they do not need to be fully cooked at this point.
- Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add butter and olive oil. Sauté the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms for 6 to 8 minutes until they become caramelized and fragrant.
- Add Flour: Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook it with the vegetables for 1 to 2 minutes to create a roux, which will thicken the gravy.
- Make the Gravy: Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce (if using). Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet and spoon the gravy over them. Cover the skillet and let everything simmer for 10 to 12 minutes until the patties are cooked through and tender.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle fresh parsley over the dish before serving. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a comforting meal.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
- Do not overmix the burger mixture to keep patties tender.
- Caramelizing the onions and mushrooms slowly enhances the depth of flavor in the gravy.
- Simmering patties in the gravy ensures they stay moist and absorb the savory flavors.
- If you prefer a gluten-free version, substitute gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour.
- Soy sauce adds umami but can be omitted or replaced with a gluten-free tamari sauce for dietary preferences.
