Description

This Cajun Shrimp and Grits recipe features creamy, cheesy grits paired with perfectly seasoned and sautéed shrimp for a classic Southern dish that comes together in just 30 minutes. Rich, flavorful, and comforting, it’s ideal for a quick weeknight dinner or a special weekend meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Grits

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup uncooked grits
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese

Shrimp

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • Chopped parsley or sliced green onions or chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Grits Base: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, water, and kosher salt. Bring to a boil, then add grits, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk to combine and ensure the mixture is smooth and lump-free.
  2. Cook the Grits: Reduce heat to medium-low, cover the saucepan, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking until grits are tender and liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat.
  3. Finish the Grits: Stir in unsalted butter and grated cheddar cheese until melted and combined. Cover and keep warm.
  4. Cook the Shrimp: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add minced garlic and sauté briefly until fragrant. Add shrimp in a single layer and cook for about 2 minutes per side until pink and opaque.
  5. Season the Shrimp: Sprinkle Cajun seasoning and lime juice over the cooked shrimp, stirring well to distribute the flavors evenly.
  6. Serve: Spoon the warm grits onto plates or shallow bowls. Top with the seasoned Cajun shrimp, and garnish with chopped parsley, sliced green onions, or chives. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can adjust the Cajun seasoning to taste depending on your preferred level of spice.
  • For creamier grits, you can substitute half the milk with heavy cream.
  • If you prefer a milder garlic flavor, reduce the garlic powder or fresh garlic accordingly.
  • Use freshly grated cheddar cheese for the best melt and flavor.
  • Serve with a wedge of lime on the side for an extra citrus kick.
