Description

These homemade Chocolate Biscuits are a delightful twist on the classic biscuit, combining rich cocoa flavor and a tender crumb. Perfect for breakfast or dessert, they are easy to make with simple ingredients and baked to perfection for a slightly firm top and soft inside.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 3/4 cup cold milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing tops)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold unsalted butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs, ensuring a flaky biscuit texture.
  4. Form Dough: Stir in the cold milk and vanilla extract just until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the biscuits tender. If using, fold in the chocolate chips gently.
  5. Knead & Shape: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round.
  6. Cut Biscuits: Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each.
  7. Brush & Bake: Lightly brush the tops of the biscuits with milk to promote browning. Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are set and slightly firm on top.
  8. Cool & Serve: Allow the biscuits to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving warm. Enjoy them with butter, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Serve these biscuits warm with butter, whipped cream, or a light dusting of powdered sugar for extra indulgence.
  • For added richness and variety, fold in a handful of white chocolate chips along with the regular chocolate chips.
  • Handle the dough gently and avoid overworking it to maintain a tender, flaky texture.
  • If milk brushing is skipped, biscuits may be less glossy but will still bake properly.
