Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 box Saltine Crackers (Can substitute with Ritz crackers for a richer taste)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup Unsalted Butter (Provides proper toffee consistency)
- 1 cup Light Brown Sugar (For sweetness and caramel flavor)
Chocolate Topping
- 2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (Can switch to milk chocolate for a sweeter flavor)
Toppings
- 1 cup Nuts (Pecans or walnuts add crunch)
- 1 cup Crushed Candy Canes (For a peppermint twist)
- Flaky Sea Salt, to taste (Enhances sweet and salty contrast)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 10×15-inch rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- Arrange Crackers: Lay saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire bottom of the prepared baking sheet, ensuring no gaps for the toffee to seep through.
- Make Toffee: Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the light brown sugar and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Let it boil for 3 minutes while stirring continuously to develop the caramel flavor and proper consistency.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Quickly pour the hot, bubbling toffee evenly over the arranged crackers, spreading with a spatula if needed to cover the surface completely.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes until the toffee is bubbly and set.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Allow them to sit for 2-3 minutes to soften before spreading into a smooth, even layer using a spatula.
- Top With Nuts and Candy Canes: While the chocolate is still warm and soft, sprinkle the chopped nuts and crushed candy canes over the top. Gently press them into the chocolate to adhere.
- Chill: Refrigerate the entire treat for at least 2 hours or until completely set and firm.
- Serve: Once set, break or cut the Christmas crack into smaller pieces and enjoy!
Notes
- You can substitute Ritz crackers for Saltines if you prefer a richer flavor and softer base.
- Using milk chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet will make the treat sweeter.
- Be sure to press the nuts and candy canes gently so they stick well to the melted chocolate.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and crunch.
- Flaky sea salt sprinkled on top enhances the sweet and salty contrast beautifully but is optional.
- Allow the toffee to boil for the full 3 minutes to ensure it sets properly after baking.
