Ingredients
Scale
Butter-Mayo Spread
- 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
Beef Patties
- 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
- ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Sandwich Assembly
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 ½ cups caramelized onions
Instructions
- Prepare the Butter-Mayo Spread: Combine the softened butter and mayonnaise in a small bowl until smooth. This mixture will be spread on the bread to create a crispy, flavorful crust when cooked.
- Make the Beef Patties: In a medium bowl, mix together ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into thin patties. Sprinkle the remaining ½ teaspoon kosher salt evenly over the patties.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches, about 3-4 minutes per side, until there is no pink remaining and the patties are cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread the butter-mayo mixture on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. On half of the bread slices, layer one slice of Swiss cheese, one beef patty, and a generous amount of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and then cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
- Cook the Patty Melts: Wipe out the skillet to remove any residue and return it to medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted completely.
- Serve: Cut each patty melt sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately while hot and melty.
Notes
- For best results, use freshly caramelized onions made by slowly cooking onions over low heat until golden and sweet.
- Ensure patties are thin for even cooking and proper melting with cheese.
- You can substitute Swiss cheese with cheddar or American cheese if preferred.
- Serve with pickles or a side of potato chips for a classic diner experience.
- Butter and mayonnaise spread helps achieve the perfect golden crust on the bread.
