Description

A simple and comforting Onion Boil recipe featuring whole onions simmered in a flavorful broth with garlic, herbs, and spices. The onions are sautéed and then gently cooked until tender, finished with a rich butter sauce and fresh parsley garnish. Perfect as a warm side dish or a light main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions

  • 4 large onions (yellow or white onions work best)

Seasonings & Aromatics

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Liquids & Fats

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare Onions: Peel the onions, keeping them whole, and trim the root ends slightly to make them stable for cooking.
  2. Sauté Onions: In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the whole onions and sauté for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally to lightly brown the outsides and develop flavor.
  3. Add Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the pot and sauté for another 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Add Broth and Seasonings: Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth. Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and paprika. Stir gently to combine all flavors.
  5. Simmer the Onions: Cover the pot with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let the onions simmer for 35-40 minutes until tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Remove Onions: Carefully remove the cooked onions from the pot and place them on a serving dish.
  7. Make Butter Sauce: In the same pot with the remaining broth, stir in the unsalted butter and cook for 1-2 minutes until the butter melts and incorporates into the broth, creating a flavorful sauce.
  8. Serve: Drizzle the warm butter sauce over the onions and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serve warm as a side dish or light main course.

Notes

  • Use yellow or white onions for the best texture and sweetness.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially the salt and paprika.
  • For a vegan option, replace butter with a plant-based alternative.
  • Chicken broth can be substituted with vegetable broth for a vegetarian dish.
  • Keep an eye on the simmering to avoid boiling vigorously, which could break apart the onions.
