Ingredients
Scale
Okra
- 1 pound Fresh okra pods, trimmed and sliced
Coating & Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons Olive oil
- 1 cup Cornmeal (can substitute with breadcrumbs)
- 1 teaspoon Paprika (smoked paprika recommended)
- 1 teaspoon Garlic powder (or fresh minced garlic)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon Black pepper (fresh ground)
- 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne pepper or chili flakes (optional for spice)
Instructions
- Preparation: Rinse the okra pods under cool water thoroughly to remove any dirt or residue, then pat them dry completely using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to ensure crispiness during cooking.
- Trim and Slice: Trim the tops off the okra pods and slice each pod in half lengthwise to expose the insides, which helps them cook evenly and become crispier.
- Coating the Okra: Place the sliced okra in a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil, tossing well to coat each piece evenly. Then sprinkle the cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne pepper over the okra. Mix thoroughly until all pieces are completely coated with the seasoned cornmeal mixture.
- Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it is hot enough to crisp the okra right away when placed inside.
- Arrange and Air Fry: Spread the coated okra pods in a single layer in the air fryer basket, avoiding overcrowding for even cooking. Air fry for 10–12 minutes, shaking or tossing the basket halfway through the cooking time to promote even browning and crispiness.
- Serve: Once the okra is crispy and golden, remove it from the air fryer. Serve immediately hot with your favorite dipping sauce or as a flavorful side dish. Optionally, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving to brighten the flavors.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use smoked paprika as suggested or add a pinch of cumin.
- Make sure the okra is completely dry before coating to achieve maximum crispiness.
- If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the okra at 425°F (220°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway.
- Cornmeal can be substituted with panko breadcrumbs for a lighter crunch.
- Adjust spices to your preference; reduce or omit cayenne for milder taste.
