Description
This Crock Pot Chicken Cheesesteak Sandwich recipe offers a delicious and easy way to enjoy the flavors of a classic cheesesteak using tender shredded chicken, sautéed onions and bell peppers, and melted cheese—all slow-cooked to perfection in a crock pot for a juicy, flavorful meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Chicken and Vegetables
- 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 medium yellow onion, sliced into thin strips
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
Seasonings
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3 tablespoons steak sauce (such as Heinz 57)
For Serving
- 6 hoagie buns
- 12 slices white American cheese or queso (provolone or Velveeta white queso recommended)
Instructions
- Prepare the Crock Pot: Grease the insert of the crock pot with non-stick spray for easy cleanup. Lay the sliced onions and green bell peppers evenly across the bottom of the crock pot. Pour the chicken broth over the vegetables to keep them moist during cooking.
- Add and Season Chicken: Place the chicken breasts on top of the bed of vegetables. Season the chicken evenly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and drizzle the steak sauce over the top. This will infuse the chicken with classic cheesesteak flavors.
- Cook the Chicken: Cover the crock pot with its lid and cook on low heat for 6 hours, or alternatively on high heat for 3 hours. The chicken should be tender and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) when fully cooked.
- Shred and Combine: Carefully remove the cooked chicken from the crock pot and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the crock pot and mix well with the cooked vegetables and juices, keeping the mixture moist and flavorful.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Using a slotted spoon, scoop the chicken and vegetable mixture onto hoagie buns. Top each sandwich with two slices of white American cheese or queso. The residual heat will gently melt the cheese to complete the sandwich.
Notes
- Leaving the cooking liquid in the crock pot keeps the chicken moist and juicy.
- Feel free to substitute the white American cheese with provolone, Velveeta white queso, or your favorite melting cheese.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of crushed red pepper or switch to a spicy steak sauce.
- To save time, use pre-sliced onions and bell peppers from the store.
- Serve with a side of pickles or chips for a complete meal.
