Ingredients
Scale
Wontons
- 30 wonton wrappers
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Soup
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 1 cup bok choy or spinach, chopped
- 1 green onion, thinly sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Wonton Filling: In a bowl, combine ground pork, finely chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, salt, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Assemble the Wontons: Place about 1 teaspoon of pork filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold to seal into a triangle or desired shape, pressing firmly to ensure no gaps.
- Cook the Wontons: Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil. Carefully add the wontons in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until they float to the surface and are cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
- Prepare the Soup Broth: In a large pot, bring chicken broth to a simmer over medium heat. Add minced garlic, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper. Let it simmer gently for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Add Greens and Wontons: Stir in chopped bok choy or spinach and cooked wontons. Simmer together for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until greens are tender and wontons are heated through.
- Serve: Ladle the hot soup into bowls, garnish with thinly sliced green onions, and serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute ground pork with ground chicken or turkey.
- If you can’t find wonton wrappers, you can use small square dumpling skins or make your own.
- Adjust soy sauce and salt amounts to taste to control sodium levels.
- Vegetarian versions can be made by omitting pork and using vegetable broth with tofu fillings.
- This soup freezes well; store wontons and broth separately for best texture upon reheating.
