Description

This Healthy Breakfast Apple Crumble is a delicious and nutritious start to your day, combining tender sautéed apples with a crunchy oat and pecan topping. Lightly sweetened with honey and enhanced with warm cinnamon, this recipe offers a wholesome alternative to traditional desserts, perfect for a nourishing breakfast or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Apples

  • 6 sweet apples, chopped
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp coconut oil

Crumble Topping

  • 2/3 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup pecans
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the crumble later.
  2. Prepare Apples: Chop the apples into small, even pieces so they cook uniformly in the next step.
  3. Sauté Apples: Heat a pan over medium-high heat; add the chopped apples, cinnamon, pinch of salt, and 2 tsp coconut oil. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the apples start to soften, allowing the spices and oil to infuse the fruit.
  4. Make Crumble Topping: Combine oats, pecans, 1 tbsp coconut oil, honey, and water in a food processor or blender. Blend until the mixture forms a sticky, crumbly texture that will create a crunchy topping once baked.
  5. Prepare Baking Dish: Lightly grease a small baking dish with coconut oil or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  6. Assemble Crumble: Spread the sautéed apples evenly over the bottom of the baking dish, then crumble the oat mixture over the top, allowing some small chunks to remain for texture.
  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving to let the flavors settle and avoid burning your mouth.

Notes

  • You can substitute pecans with walnuts or almonds if preferred.
  • Use honey or maple syrup for a natural sweetener alternative.
  • For a vegan version, ensure the honey is replaced with maple syrup.
  • Serve warm with a dollop of yogurt or a splash of plant-based milk for extra creaminess.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
