Ingredients
Scale
Beef and Seasoning
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 ½ teaspoon paprika (regular or smoked)
Vegetables and Sauce
- ½ of a medium cabbage, chopped
- 1 medium carrot, grated or julienned
- 1 medium to large onion, sliced or chopped
- 3 tablespoons tomato sauce or paste
- ½ cup beef broth or vegetable broth
Cooking Oil
- 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil for cooking
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef along with salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside on a plate.
- Sauté Onions and Carrots: In the same skillet, add the vegetable oil if needed. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Then add the grated or julienned carrot and continue cooking until the carrot softens, about 3 minutes.
- Add Tomato Sauce and Broth: Stir in the tomato sauce or paste along with the beef or vegetable broth. Mix well and let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Add Cabbage and Season: Add the chopped cabbage into the skillet. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients. Cover with a lid and let it simmer for about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is softened to your preference.
- Combine Beef and Finish: Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet and stir to mix everything evenly. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives if desired. Serve the dish hot, either as is or with a side of your choice.
Notes
- For crunchier cabbage, cook until it is partially wilted; for softer cabbage, simmer longer.
- You can substitute vegetable broth for beef broth to make the dish lighter or vegetarian (just omit beef).
- Adjust paprika quantity for a smokier or milder flavor based on preference.
- Serve with crusty bread, rice, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
