Description

These Honey Whole Wheat Pan Rolls are soft, slightly sweet, and made with wholesome whole wheat flour and natural honey. Perfect for family dinners or holiday meals, these homemade rolls boast a tender crumb and golden crust, balanced by the gentle sweetness of honey.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp salt
    • Wet Ingredients

      • 1/4 cup honey
      • 1 1/4 cups warm water
      • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
      • 1/4 cup butter, melted
      • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Dissolve Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water, letting it sit until it becomes frothy and activated.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour, honey, salt, and melted butter to evenly distribute all dry and wet ingredients.
  3. Mix Dough: Add the dissolved yeast mixture and the egg to the flour mixture, combining thoroughly until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead Dough: Knead the dough by hand for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic, developing the gluten structure.
  5. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  6. Divide Dough: Punch down the risen dough to release air, then divide it into 12 equal portions for uniform rolls.
  7. Shape Rolls: Shape each piece into a smooth ball and arrange them evenly spaced in a greased baking dish or pan.
  8. Second Rise: Cover the arranged rolls with a towel and let them rise again for 30 minutes until puffed and nearly doubled.
  9. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes until they turn golden brown on top.
  10. Finish & Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush them with melted butter while warm for a shiny, flavorful finish. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Use melted butter for flavor inside the dough and extra butter to brush the baked rolls for a soft crust.
  • Allow enough time for both rises to ensure fluffy, well-leavened rolls.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat gently before serving.
  • You can substitute all-purpose flour if whole wheat flour is too dense for your preference, though texture will vary.
