Description

Puerto Rican Quesitos are delightful cream cheese-filled pastries made with buttery puff pastry, sweetened cream cheese, and a glossy sugar glaze. Perfectly golden and flaky, they make a delicious treat for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

Sugar Glaze

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for extra shine)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix well until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Cut Puff Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a flat surface. Cut it into six equal-sized rectangles to form individual pastries.
  4. Fill Pastries: Spoon a generous amount of the cream cheese filling onto the center of each puff pastry rectangle.
  5. Seal Pastries: Fold each pastry over the filling to create a pocket and press the edges gently to seal and prevent filling from leaking out during baking.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each pastry with the beaten egg. This will give them a beautiful golden and glossy finish once baked.
  7. Bake: Place the pastries onto the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pastries are puffed up and golden brown.
  8. Make Sugar Glaze: While the pastries bake, heat the granulated sugar, water, and optional honey in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely, forming a syrup.
  9. Glaze Pastries: Once the pastries are out of the oven and still warm, brush them generously with the prepared sugar glaze to add shine and a touch of sweetness. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened for easy mixing and creamy texture.
  • Use chilled puff pastry and handle it quickly to keep it from getting too warm and sticky.
  • The sugar glaze adds a nice glossy finish and a subtle crunch; the honey is optional but recommended for extra shine.
  • Serve these pastries warm or at room temperature for the best taste and texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container; reheat gently before serving.
