Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40)
Toffee
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Flaky sea salt for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Arrange Saltine Crackers: Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire bottom surface without overlapping.
- Make Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together. Stir constantly as the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Continue boiling gently for 3 to 4 minutes until the mixture is smooth, thick, and caramel-like.
- Spread Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread it out evenly, ensuring all crackers are coated.
- Bake Toffee-Coated Crackers: Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee mixture is bubbly and set.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer so they begin to melt.
- Spread Melted Chocolate: Let the chocolate chips sit on the hot toffee for about 2 minutes to soften. Then, using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate smoothly and evenly over the toffee surface.
- Add Sea Salt (Optional): If desired, sprinkle flaky sea salt over the melted chocolate to enhance flavor with a salty touch.
- Cool and Chill: Allow the toffee to cool at room temperature for 30 minutes to set. Then refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours until the chocolate and toffee are fully firm.
- Break and Serve: Once set, break the toffee into individual pieces and enjoy your delicious homemade saltine toffee treat.
Notes
- You can substitute dark or milk chocolate chips according to your preference.
- For extra texture and flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts over the melted chocolate before chilling.
- Store saltine toffee in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week to maintain freshness.
