Description

This Sesame Chicken recipe delivers crispy, golden chicken bites coated in a luscious sweet and savory sauce. Perfectly balanced with honey, garlic, and a hint of sesame, it’s a family-favorite Chinese-American dish that’s easy to prepare and irresistibly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Coating

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)

Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken Coating: In a large bowl, mix together cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, and black pepper. This mixture will create the crispy coating that makes the chicken irresistible.
  2. Coat the Chicken: Dip the chicken pieces into the beaten eggs, ensuring they are fully coated. Then, dredge the egg-coated chicken evenly in the flour-cornstarch mixture, pressing lightly so it sticks well.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or wok, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure the oil is hot enough to fry the chicken and create a crispy crust without absorbing too much oil.
  4. Fry the Chicken: Carefully fry the chicken pieces in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 3-4 minutes per batch, or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to remove the chicken and let it drain on paper towels.
  5. Prepare the Sauce: In a separate saucepan, combine soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  6. Thicken the Sauce: Stir in the prepared cornstarch slurry and continue cooking, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until the sauce has thickened to a glossy consistency.
  7. Coat the Chicken: Toss the fried chicken in the sauce ensuring each piece is fully coated with the sweet and savory mixture.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions over the sauced chicken before serving. This adds extra flavor and a beautiful presentation.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, double-dip the chicken by coating it again with the flour mixture after the first frying and then fry a second time.
  • Serve this dish with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables to complete the meal.
  • You can adjust the sweetness or saltiness by increasing or decreasing the honey or soy sauce according to your preference.
