Ingredients
Scale
Chicken
- 4 boneless chicken thighs or breasts
Sauce
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, sliced (optional)
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated (optional)
Thickener and Garnish
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the chicken: Place the boneless chicken thighs or breasts in the slow cooker, spreading them evenly at the bottom.
- Make the sauce: In a medium bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, ketchup, minced garlic, and if desired, grated ginger and sliced onion. Mix well to create a flavorful sauce.
- Pour the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce mixture evenly over the chicken in the slow cooker, ensuring the chicken is well coated.
- Cook the chicken: Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
- Remove chicken: Carefully take the chicken out of the slow cooker and shred it with forks or leave it whole based on your preference.
- Thicken the sauce: Stir the cornstarch mixed with water into the sauce remaining in the slow cooker. Switch the slow cooker to HIGH and cook uncovered for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens to a glaze-like consistency.
- Combine chicken and sauce: Return the shredded or whole chicken to the thickened sauce, ensuring it’s well coated and heated evenly.
- Serve and garnish: Serve the honey garlic chicken hot over steamed rice or noodles, and garnish generously with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for an extra burst of flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or sriracha to the sauce mixture.
- Use boneless skinless chicken thighs for juicier meat, or breasts for a leaner option.
- If thickening the sauce is not preferred, you can skip the cornstarch step for a thinner, more pourable sauce.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave, adding a splash of water if the sauce becomes too thick.
