Description

This Sour Cream and Onion Chicken recipe combines juicy seared chicken breasts with a creamy, flavorful sour cream and dry onion soup mix topping. Baked to perfection, this easy and comforting dish makes a delicious weeknight dinner that’s ready in just 40 minutes. Garnished with fresh parsley, it’s perfect served alongside your favorite sides.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Sauce

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (about 1 oz) dry onion soup mix

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the chicken.
  2. Season Chicken: Lightly season the boneless, skinless chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides.
  3. Sear Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the chicken breasts for 2-3 minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust.
  4. Prepare Sauce: In a bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream with 1 packet (about 1 oz) of dry onion soup mix. Stir until well blended.
  5. Assemble: Transfer the seared chicken breasts into a baking dish. Evenly spread the sour cream and onion mixture over the top of each piece.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F) and the sauce is hot and bubbly.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove the dish from the oven and optionally sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley before serving for a touch of color and freshness.

Notes

  • You can use chicken thighs if preferred, adjusting cooking time accordingly.
  • For a crispier top, broil the chicken for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables, rice, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
  • Make sure not to overcook the chicken to keep it juicy and tender.
