Description

This Teriyaki Salmon recipe features tender salmon fillets marinated in a flavorful homemade teriyaki sauce made of soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Pan-seared to caramelized perfection, the salmon is served with a thickened teriyaki glaze, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. It’s a quick and healthy Japanese-inspired main dish ideal for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Salmon

  • 4 salmon fillets, skin-on or skinless, about 6 ounces each

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Thickening Mixture (Optional)

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water

Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Teriyaki Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and black pepper to create the teriyaki sauce.
  2. Marinate the Salmon: Reserve 2 tablespoons of the sauce for serving, then place salmon fillets in a shallow dish and pour the remaining sauce over them. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  3. Preheat the Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and lightly oil the surface to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook the Salmon: Place the salmon fillets in the hot skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, depending on thickness, until they are cooked through and have a slight caramelized crust.
  5. Thicken the Sauce (Optional): If you prefer a thicker glaze, pour the reserved 2 tablespoons of sauce into a small saucepan, bring to a simmer, then stir in the cornstarch mixture. Cook until the sauce thickens, stirring frequently.
  6. Serve: Drizzle the thickened sauce over the cooked salmon. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for a beautiful finish and added flavor.

Notes

  • Use low-sodium soy sauce for a lighter sodium option.
  • Instead of pan-searing, you can bake the salmon at 400°F (200°C) for 12–15 minutes.
  • Serve with steamed rice and vegetables for a complete and balanced meal.
