Description

A classic and flavorful spaghetti recipe featuring a rich tomato sauce infused with garlic, oregano, basil, and a hint of red pepper flakes. Perfectly cooked spaghetti is tossed in the vibrant sauce, finished with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese for a comforting and delicious meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Spaghetti

  • 12 oz spaghetti pasta

Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Finishing Touches

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: extra olive oil for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Cook Spaghetti: Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving 1/2 cup of the pasta water for later use, and set aside.
  2. Sauté Garlic: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  3. Prepare Sauce: Add crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  4. Toss Pasta with Sauce: Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the tomato sauce. Toss well to coat the noodles evenly. If the sauce is too thick, add some of the reserved pasta water to help it cling to the pasta.
  5. Add Fresh Basil: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil for a fresh, herbaceous flavor.
  6. Serve: Plate the spaghetti and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Optionally drizzle with extra olive oil for added richness. Serve immediately and enjoy your classic spaghetti dish.

Notes

  • Reserve pasta water is key to adjusting sauce consistency and helping it adhere to the noodles.
  • You can omit red pepper flakes if you prefer a milder sauce.
  • Fresh basil added at the end gives the sauce a bright, fresh flavor.
  • Use good quality Parmesan for best flavor impact.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
